Light

Fading in the distance,
Sinking farther and farther below the line.
It illuminates the world, bringing life and
Light
To a world simmering with darkness.

Hearts charred from the past,
Shriveling into a miniscule portion of their former selves.
Poverty, disease, corruption, and more, unite these hearts
And send them off to a world untouched by the
Light.

A world with no happiness, love and no music
Is a world in which there’s no point to living.
Light will fade from these hearts, and
The darkness will creep in.

The Internal War of an Ordinary Soldier

 *An original poem*

Light slowly fades,

shadows reach around us,

engulfing us,

wrapping us in their strong arms.

They conceal the horrors,

the secrets,

and the memories we keep.

Once settled, we cannot see.

Sound is muffled.

We are safe,

yet we weep.

We weep for those we knew;

the fallen ones,

the ones who didn't make it out alive.

Shouts, they ring out in the distance.

We are instantly alert,

fumbling for our arms.

We scramble out,

away from our safety,

into the cool desert air.

A solid wall of bodies approaches,

and weapons are drawn.

Everyone's ready to fight,

to win,

to die trying.

Multiple rounds of explosions.

All are down--

all except me, standing alone.

My knees give,

and my weapons fall.

Looking toward the sky,

I notice the dark is fading.

Morning is here, and yet,

through the fire,

I see the world as it really is.

Unfair and cruel,

fate and fatal,

that's the way we live.

I lie down,

needing some peace,

and dream of a distant place.

A place where even the angels can't see me weep.

Eclipsed Birthmark

This is an original poem

Against the rich, velvety blackness
Of the night sky
Lie the many shiny blemishes
That mark the beginning of time.

A cold zephyr sweeps the Earth
As we look toward what our ancestors have all seen before,
A majestic cover-up
That mars the midnight sky.

The shiny blemishes twinkle high up above
But cannot be a steady reminder
For they burn out
Like an exhausted candle.

The cover-up shifts,
Revealing what we've all seen hundreds of times,
And there hangs the greatest blemish of all,
The birthmark upon the night sky.
